Job Summary

Anesthesiology is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong problem solving and analytical skills to join our finance team as a Financial Specialist Intermediate/Senior to perform a variety of financial functions for our academic and hospital departmental operations.

Responsibilities*

  • Review, analyze, and pre-approve all departmental expense reports, including student & non-UM employee travel expense reports, for accuracy and compliance. 
  • Track all faculty and fellow educational expenses and maintain databases for individual educational allowance balances. Prepare a summary of CME expenses annually for submission to the Medical School. 
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on University financial systems, including expense reports, Procurement, reconciliation processes, and other finance items to all members of the department. 
  • Assist supervisors and their staff by providing training in routine financial processes, such as preparing requisitions, P-card reconciliation, and expense report preparation. Update or develop finance training materials for staff who have finance-related functions as part of their job descriptions. 
  • Communicate updates to staff members across the department on policies and procedures pertaining to various financial procedures and protocols. Keep division managers updated/trained on new processes for Shared Services, expense reporting, and Medical School/departmental policies and procedures. 
  • Procure goods and services required for Anesthesiology operations from various sources. Obtain and/or renew purchase contracts. Interact and work closely with the University's Procurement group.
  • Process invoices, journal entries, PeoplePay payments, and other transactions as needed.
  • Serve as the main contact for Shared Services case management for the department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to respond effectively to different types of questions and situations.
  • Aptitude for accuracy, attention to detail, and managing time effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels and with varying levels of financial knowledge.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with Excel to perform financial reporting and management.

Financial Specialist Intermediate:

  • Bachelor's degree and 2-3 years of experience with an emphasis in either accounting or finance, or an equivalent combination of work experience and education.

Financial Specialist Senior:

  • Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of experience with an emphasis in either accounting or finance, or an equivalent combination of work experience and education. 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience in healthcare, higher education and/or academic medical center setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of University policies and procedures, as well as the M-Pathways Financials Systems.

Background Screening
