Job Summary
The newborn hearing screener technicians perform hearing screening on all newborns in the Mother-Baby unit, NICU, and other specialty care floors. Additionally, they provide technical assistance to staff audiologists in the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program.

Responsibilities*
- Provide technical assistance to staff audiologists in the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program.
- Perform hearing screening on newborns in the Mother-Baby Unit and in the Neonatal Intensive Care unit (NICU) following the established protocol and report results in the electronic patient record, making plans for appropriate follow-up as needed based on results of the screening and risk factors for hearing loss.
- Communicate screening results with other providers following system-approved methods for insuring patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
- Follow established infection control procedures.
- Troubleshoot screening equipment and report problems, track supply inventory, and report other needs to EHDI coordinator.
- Complete billing documentation for all screening procedures.
- Work a flexible schedule that may include 1-2 weekends per month and some holidays.
Required Qualifications*
- Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary
Physical Requirements
- This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.

- Experience with direct-patient care
- Knowledge of Electronic Medical Record System
- Knowledge of computer and systems

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
