Job Summary
Must be eligible for Work Study Winter 2026. This is a position with an off campus agency. There are several available positions within this agency.
Safe Places Program Staff: Safe Places program staff work under the direct supervision of the Site Director and Safe Places Director and will be responsible for providing an appropriately safe, caring, and enriching environment for the children enrolled in the Safe Places programs. Counselors are responsible for conducting themselves appropriately, setting an example for children, parents, and coworkers by reflecting core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Scheduled shifts are weekday evenings from 4:00pm-7:30pm
Kids Zone Staff: The Kids Zone Staff ensures a safe, engaging, and enriching environment for children and youth participating in the Kids Zone program. This role includes planning and leading age-appropriate activities, maintaining a clean and organized space, and ensuring all agency policies and procedures are followed to protect the safety and well-being of all participants.
Member Experience Associate: The Member Experience Associate reports to the Membership Director. This position is available to be scheduled with shifts starting as early as 5:30am and ending as late as 9:00pm. Weekend shifts are also available.
Responsibilities*
Safe Places Program Staff:
- Ensures the safety and engagement of children in the program.
- Provide homework and encourage academic progress.
- Follows program lesson plans and implementation plans developmentally appropriately, meeting the participants' physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs.
- Provides careful, attentive supervision, and alert.
- Serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior and understand positive youth development approaches to the academic and social development of youth.
- Facilitates a program environment that invites exploration, promotes positive play, and welcomes children.
- Promotes a team concept through a positive approach to supervision, communication, and interactions with others. Maintains on-going communication with supervisor.
- Maintains accurate records for attendance and meal counts.
- Serves and ensures program participants receive proper snacks and meals
- Utilizes C.A.T.C.H curriculum in programming and activities
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of agency's mission, purpose and goals, Safe Places policies and agency's standards; ensures the program meets the highest standards of excellence.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required
- Assists in clean-up duties as needed to ensure our program area is safe and clean for the program participants
- Comply with all emergency procedures appropriate to the site and in conformity with procedures adopted by emergency service authorities to ensure the safety of the children and staff
- Maintain all supplies, equipment, and materials; inform the Site Director when new/additional supplies are needed
- Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children.
- Attend required abuse risk management training.
- Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising children.
- Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
- Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
- Other duties as assigned
Kids Zone Staff:
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all children in the Kids Zone at all times.
- Maintain active supervision and presence throughout the space.
- Follow all agency child protection policies, including proper check-in/check-out procedures and only releasing children to authorized adults.
- Create and implement daily schedules of structured and free-play activities.
- Lead games, crafts, storytelling, and other interactive programming.
- Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for all children.
- Verify agency memberships and check in participants using the designated system.
- Maintain accurate attendance and sign-in/out records.
- Communicate effectively with parents and guardians.
- Emergency Preparedness - Be knowledgeable of and follow all emergency procedures.
- Respond calmly and appropriately to incidents and emergencies.
- Clean and sanitize toys, equipment, and surfaces regularly.
- Maintain a tidy and organized environment throughout the shift.
- Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children.
- Attend required abuse risk management training.
- Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
- Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
- Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
- Ensure unused rooms and closets remain locked; routinely monitor high-risk locations (locker-rooms and bathrooms), etc.
- Ensure children are properly signed in and signed out, ensure only authorized adults are allowed in the facility, etc.
- Must be able to bend, crawl, climb, and move without limitations
- Must be able to push, pull, or lift a minimum of 15lbs
- Must be able stand or sit for extended periods of time
Membership Experience Associate:
- Engage people in ways that:

- Welcome, greet, and check in all members and guests and acknowledge those exiting the facility. Receive telephone calls and provide membership and program information to callers.
- Be Knowledgeable and communicate with members and guests regarding program information, membership policies and procedures, and building schedules.
- Process new and renewal membership payments, register members and participants for all classes and programs, and update member information.
- Monitor the behavior of members and guests to ensure their safety; communicate with emergency dispatchers during an emergency and provide first aid as requested.
- At all times, model, reinforce, and abide by the agency's core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility and the agency's Code of Conduct.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all membership information.
- Perform daily closeout and a cash balance of money received during the shift, and balance the cash drawer.
- Monitor the coffee station, and prepare and serve coffee as needed.
- Keep the membership area and lobby area organized, clean, and functional.
- Participate as requested with the annual Partner with Youth Campaign
- Attending all staff meetings and training as required

Required Qualifications*
- Valid Michigan's Driver's License.
- Successfully pass a background screening.
- Must be eligible for Work Study for Winter 2026.
- Skills and Abilities: Ability to make sound decisions and follow all risk management protocols.
- Education/Certifications: This position is designed for undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in museums.
- Kid Zone Staff additional requirement: CPR, AED, and First Aid (must be obtained within 30 days of hire)
- For Member Experience Associate: A desire to undertake efforts to connect with others, show responsibility, engage effectively with others, and care about our cause. Be proficient with technology, including Word, Excel, and Membership software.

Modes of Work
Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan

Background Screening
