Job Summary

NOTE: This position is term-limited for 21 months (through November 2027). 

The laboratory of Roger Cone at the Life Sciences Institute (LSI) is looking for a Research Investigator to oversee a research project focused on the preclinical discovery and development of melanocortin neuropeptides. These studies will require considerable expertise and research experiences in neurobiology and cell culture, including development and culture of differentiated neuronal cell lines, and assays of these lines for neuronal function and activity.  You will oversee research performed by students and research technicians, report directly to Dr. Cone and perform your work onsite at the LSI.

Responsibilities*

Experimental responsibilities will include:

  • Design experiments in collaboration with others
  • Development of hypothalamic neuronal cell lines
  • Use of hypothalamic cell lines for assaying neuronal activity in response to pharmacologic reagents
  • Maintain mammalian cell cultures and stocks
  • Perform quantitative analyses and communicate findings through reports and summaries
  • Solve experimental problems that arise in any of the responsibilities

Non-experimental responsibilities will include:

  • Provide consultation and advice to lab members in areas of expertise
  • Maintain clear laboratory notebooks
  • Provide detailed documentation so experiments can be replicated
  • Follow laboratory best practices for safety and quality
  • Help manage projects
  • Assist PI in preparing manuscripts and grants 
  • Oversee research performed by students and research staff

Required Qualifications*

  • Ph.D. in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, or related discipline
  • Five (5) years of experience of postdoctoral work 
  • Five (5) years of experience in cell and molecular biology techniques, including culture of differentiated neuronal cells
  • Five (5) years of experience assaying neuronal cell function
  • Five (5) years of experience mentoring students and research staff
  • Strong publication record in relevant work
  • Prior experience working in a collaborative environment

Desired Qualifications*

  • Two (2) years of experience working with mice, including some mouse surgical experience
  • Experience with derivation of specific neuronal cell types from stem cells
