Job Summary

Department Summary:

The mission of the University of Michigan Recreation is to enrich lives through connection, movement & discovery. The Department operates multiple programs, four indoor facilities and three outdoor field complexes. The department consists of 40 full-time staff and over 700 student employees. Established in 1913, the department is considered to be one of the first collegiate recreation programs and is the first program to have a facility dedicated to student recreation (Intramural Sports Building, 1928). Michigan Recreation reports to Student Life through the Associate Vice President of Student Life (Health & Well-Being).

Position Summary:

The Senior Assistant Director - Sport Programs & Development is responsible for overseeing overall leadership, administration of programs, and staff that include Club Sports, Intramural Sports, and Esports.  Responsibilities include personnel, policies and procedures, operations, equipment, sales, risk management, and compliance for areas of oversight. Provides direct oversight and leadership of Michigan Recreation Development (fundraising) initiatives. Creates budgets, policies, procedures, and directs operations of all areas of oversight.  Provides outstanding customer service, strategic leadership and vision, mentorship, and direct supervision for staff in all areas of oversight.  Provides direct supervision to the Assistant Director - Club Sports and the Assistant Director - Intramural Sports/Esports. Provides indirect supervision to two Program Managers, one Rowing Coach, and approximately 200 student staff, including Student Coordinators, Program Supervisors, and Intramural Sports Officials. Serves on assigned committees to represent the Department.
 

Responsibilities*

Program Oversight (35%)

  • Provide supervision and direction for the Club Sports, Intramural Sports, and Esports programs and staff
  • Ensure compliance of Intramural Sports, Club Sports, Michigan Recreation, and University of Michigan policies and procedures by Club Sports and Esports staff, teams, and coaches, and Intramural Sports participants and staff
  • Establish and manage Club Sports, Intramural Sports, and Esports programs' goals and objectives
  • Collaborate with various University units to ensure the success of all Sport programs, to include Athletics, Risk Management, Licensing, Center for Campus Involvement, Office of Student Conflict Resolution, Student Life Budget & Finance, etc.
  • Deliver high-quality customer service and communication (internal and external)

Development (Fundraising) Oversight (25%)

  • Serve as the Club Sports program liaison with Student Life Development
  • Oversee the education of Club Sports leaders around development policies, procedures, and best practices
  • Package and share information about opportunities for impact, to be shared with prospective donors
  • Collaborate and execute on annual stewardship for donors to all Michigan Recreation gift funds
  • Execute the selection and awarding of Club Sports dues waivers and department scholarships
  • Lead the execution of departmental fundraising programs and initiatives
  • Manage the collection, coordination, and submission of department data to the Office of University Development

Staff Oversight (15%)

  • Provide supervision, direction, coaching, and mentoring of direct reports
  • Evaluate and provide regular feedback to all direct reports
  • Ensure direct reports represent the Department in a positive way
  • Ensure the hiring and development of part-time student staff meet the department's needs and goals

Fiscal Oversight (15%)

  • Prepare, oversee, forecast, and manage the operating budgets for areas of oversight
  • Manage the approval of expenditures from Department, gift, and agency accounts for Club Sports teams
  • Establish and meet all revenue and expense goals for all areas of oversight
  • Ensure compliance of operations with department, division, and university policies
  • Work collaboratively with the Departmental financial staff and the Student Life Budget & Finance
  • Establish and meet revenue and expense goals
  • Design and produce reports and other analytical mechanisms in order to assist with the overall analysis of Michigan Recreation operations

Leadership (10%)

  • Attend professional development opportunities, as assigned
  • Assist in developing and enforcing departmental policies
  • Ensure the development of students and professional staff in all areas of supervision
  • Serve on committees or work teams to support the department, division, and university
  • Collaborate with university colleagues to represent the department

Required Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in leading and/or managing full-time staff
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in organizing, managing, and leading athletic or recreational sport programs, student organizations, and/or development (fundraising) activities with direct experience in managing policies, procedures, and risk management.
  • Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility:

  • Prepare, oversee, forecast, and manage the operating budgets of areas of oversight, totaling approximately $1.3 million.

Working Conditions:

  • Evening and weekend work responsibilities, as needed
  • Be available by phone to provide leadership during times when facilities and programs are operating
