Job Summary

The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design is looking for an experienced Studio Safety Coordinator, with expertise in wood and metal fabrication and safe studio practices. The Studio Safety Coordinator is responsible for studio operational, administrative, maintenance, and organizational oversight. They provide hands-on demonstrations and training for students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, they monitor shops and studios, and manage safety communications and records.

Please Note: This is an evening position scheduled for 1 p.m. - 9 p.m. 

The weekly schedule for this position will be split between two locations: Art & Architecture Building and the Stamps School Faculty/Graduate Studios.

Responsibilities*

  • Manage faculty, graduate, and A&A studio spaces, including evening management to ensure safe, supervised access.
  • Maintain studio facilities, equipment, and supplies through preventative maintenance programs, inventory management, and coordinated purchasing.
  • Train and document authorized studio users following studio safety policies and maintain accurate safety records.
  • Ensure a safe and secure studio environment by enforcing usage policies, following OSEH procedures, and overseeing chemical and solvent handling, storage, and disposal.
  • Help develop and implement studio safety policies, hazard communication plans, and safety inspection protocols.
  • Collaborate with faculty and Studio Coordinators to support pedagogy, troubleshoot technical and spatial needs, and improve studio operations.
  • Provide technical and instructional support through workshops, special projects, and purchasing and distribution of course materials.
  • Support special projects, school events, and exhibition activities.
     

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Art & Design or similar field, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 3 years experience with specified studio tools, machines, and processes associated with wood and metal fabrication
  • Experience maintaining the equipment associated with the specified studio processes, including wood and metal fabrication
  • Demonstrated commitment to safe studio practices
  • Experience with digital organization tools, such as spreadsheets (can maintain complex spreadsheets) or databases
  • Demonstrated commitment to facilitating a community of diverse creative practitioners
  • Frequently transport objects weighing >25 lbs

This position is onsite, on the University of Michigan North Campus.
