Job Summary

NOTE: This is a part-time 75% effort position (30 hrs/week). This position is located in Pine Ridge, SD and only available for applicants living in the Pine Ridge, SD area. 

The University of Michigan is conducting a research study focused on sexual violence prevention on and around the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The study is called Peaceful Means. We are hiring a permanent Research Technician to support this work on an hourly basis.

Peaceful Means is a Native American co-led sexual violence prevention project on the Pine Ridge Reservation housed at the University of Michigan School of Social Work. Peaceful Means is seeking an individual to serve as the Research Technician for this and other projects.

Individuals in this position will assist with in-school data collection, recruitment and retention efforts, as well as interact and engage with local Pine Ridge Reservation school staff and community members, on behalf of the Peaceful Means research team at the University of Michigan. This includes conducting pre- and post-test surveys community and grades 3-12, collecting guardian consents at schools and in the community, and calling youth and guardians whose children missed the in-school survey. Other duties include other administrative tasks like processing consent forms, data entry, sharing data process improvement suggestions to the research team, and other tasks as assigned. The position is based in Pine Ridge, SD.

The person in this position will be supervised by Pine Ridge Research Staff and Faculty from Ann Arbor, MI. Some days may be remote work eligible with most of the time needed onsite on Pine Ridge.

Responsibilities*

  • Provide overall administrative and logistical support for the Peaceful Means team on the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota. 
  • Visit school locations to assist with distributing pre and post data collection surveys, and any other project specific data collection or follow up required.
  • Recruit and enroll participants for the project via phone, email, and home visits.
  • Visit school and community events to share information about the project.
  • Enter collected data accurately and promptly.
  • Attending meetings and sharing ideas, working as part of a team, and taking notes as needed.
  • Hours will vary and may include evenings/weekends/early mornings in addition to normal business hours. 
  • Collaborate with the University of Michigan team based in Pine Ridge, SD.
  • Complete required ethical and project training at a satisfactory level.

Required Qualifications*

  • High School Diploma.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and Access.
  • Experience with Qualtrics.
  • At least one year of experience with direct, in-person experience with sexual violence prevention research among youth and children in the schools on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
  • At least one year of experience with research data collection. Knowledge of research ethics and study design.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage with community partners and other staff.
  • Experience with coordinating meetings, setting up agendas, facilitating meetings via Zoom, taking notes, and sending notes to stakeholders after the meetings. 
  • At least one year of experience in community- and school-based engagement or research.
  • Ability to work independently and solve problems as needed and to follow the direction of research coordinator, research staff, and Principal Investigator.
  • Must be able to complete and pass University of Michigan and Pine Ridge Reservation School background checks. 
  • Must be able to pass a drug test.
  • Have a current driver's license to become an authorized UM driver.

Desired Qualifications*

  • AA degree or equivalent (at least 60 credit hours).
  • Deep ties to the Pine Ridge Reservation community.
  • Experience and/or willingness to mentor data collectors.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience conducting research in schools on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
