Michigan Medicine NHC Therapy-MedSport is currently seeking a compassionate, enthusiastic, and patient-oriented Sports Physical Therapist who will share the goal of creating the ideal experience for our patients, families and employees, experienced in the treatment of sports/orthopedic extremity injuries and conditions for active individuals from pediatrics to geriatrics at our Northville Health Center facility. The Physical Therapist is responsible for the evaluation and treatment of patients in a high-volume, sports medicine setting. Responsibilities*

Basic Function and Responsibility

  • To evaluate and treat patients with diseases, injuries, disorders and disabilities; relieve pain, develop or restore function and maintain maximum performance using physical therapy procedures and exercise; and to assist in classroom and clinical teaching.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interpret PT orders and referrals to ensure necessary precautions are identified so that appropriate physical therapy evaluation and treatment can be provided.
  • Develop focused individually designed treatment plans based on the patient's functional goals.
  • Utilizes independent clinical decision making to progress patients and modify treatment depending upon the patient's needs and medical status.
  • Monitor patients throughout the provision of treatment and respond appropriately to changes in patient status.
  • Collaborate with Athletic Trainers and PTAs to ensure continuity and quality of care.
  • Instruct patients and their families in home treatment programs.
  • Document patient evaluation, treatment and discharge status clearly, concisely, and in a timely manner.
  • Stay current with best practices and continuing education in physical therapy.
  • May conduct research under the guidance of a Physical Therapy Director.
  • May conduct special projects contributing to teaching materials and procedures used in physical therapy.
  • Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system may be required in certain areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • If licensed prior to 2016: Bachelor's degree in physical therapy or basic MS.
  • If licensed on or after 2016: Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy (DPT).
  • Completion of an accredited Physical Therapy Program and Clinical Internship.
  • A current licensure as a Physical Therapist in the State of Michigan.
  • This position requires Primary Source Verification.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Qualified candidates should have 1-3 years of sports medicine rehabilitation experience with orthopedic injuries and conditions, postoperative patient care, and return to sport/function progressions.
  • Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Sports or Orthopedics from the ABPTRFE or willing to engage in training to gain this credential.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in patient care and treatment with a strong focus on manual interventions and therapeutic exercise programming.
  • Passion for rehabilitation and helping patients regain independence.
  • Collaborative mindset and positive attitude to contribute to a high-performing multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Coverage of same-day appointments and open/close clinic schedule hours

Supervision Exercised

  • Functional supervision is exercised over physical therapist Assistants, Athletic Trainers, physical therapy students, and other support staff. 


Physical Requirements

  • This position requires extensive standing/walking, as well as, lifting, positioning, pushing, pulling, and/or transferring of patients.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
