Responsibilities*

  • Oversee daily laboratory operations, including preparation and stocking of reagents, buffers, plates, special researcher?s orders and other consumables.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment by operating the glass washer, calibrating instruments, and coordinating routine maintenance.
  • Place, track, and manage orders for scientific supplies and equipment.
  • Maintain inventory systems, monitor expenditures, and manage vendor relationships.
  • Coordinate equipment servicing and repairs as needed.
  • Keep all the common lab spaces clean and organized daily.
  • Collect biohazard and dispose.
  • Monitor and fill the nitrogen Dewar's.
  • Oversee laboratory standard operating procedures and ensure compliance with safety and institutional requirements.
  • Train and supervise student assistants.
  • Provide general administrative and operational support to the Principal Investigator and laboratory personnel as needed.
  • Keep the lab protocol binder updated with new researcher protocols.
  • Update the lab manager's SOP guide of new lab manager policies as they change.
  • Do an annual EHS chemical inventory and update the documentation online and hardcopies in the lab spaces.
  • Complete the chemical waste manifest & order pickup with EHS.
  • Onboard and offboard new members to the labs (lab orientation, lab safety, ensure they have completed the EHS mandatory training).
  • Maintain training records of all current employees in the lab - annual review.
  • Conduct monthly EHS safety compliance surveys and keep researchers abreast of new policies.
  • Act as a lab safety liaison.
  • Gather and complete the online Morgan lab coat cleaning form and take the lab coats to the basement for cleaning and pick them up.
  • Attend the annual EHS lab safety meeting (during lab hours) and update the EHS blue binder annually prior to the inspection.
  • Every semester (or when new employees are hired) , update contact and emergency information for all lab members, copy and put on the doors.
  • Monthly, flush all eye washes and document on the tag.
  • Schedule lab meetings and data club days, times and locations every semester.
  • Attend lab meetings.
  • Notify Biology HR or HHMI when new employees are being brought on board and work with HR to get all hiring details established.
  • Approve hourly HHMI employees submitted time.
  • Assist with setting up employee travel, lodging and travel reimbursements at both HHMI & Umich.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for HHMI business and UMich business.
  • Assist with monthly university computer compliance and annual HHMI equipment inventories.
  • Direct requests to proper lab members and keep lines of communication moving forward regarding lab business.
  • Schedule equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Contact BSB facilities when repair is needed on the autoclaves & dishwashers.

Skills You Have

  • Generally experienced in job duties and in the principles and practices associated with those duties with an understanding of the underlying scientific principles.
  • Ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a diverse population.
  • Knowledge of the Google platform: Docs, Sheets, Forms etc.
  • Actively seeks opportunities to increase skills and expertise.
  • Able to learn complex tasks with general instruction.
  • Able to train others.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in science
  • Demonstrate proficiency in performing basic laboratory procedures (see details below) with minimal supervision
  • Self-motivated and conscientious
  • Ideally, prior administrative and lab tech experience.
  • Ability to maintain a stationary position for extended periods. 
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator or copy machine. 
  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information with others.
  • Ability to move or transport materials weighing up to [X] pounds. **list a number, not just several**
  • Ability to perceive, recognize, and inspect [work materials/data/surroundings].
  • Willingness to work in environments with potential exposure to malodorous vapors or chemicals.

Additional Information

Number of Available Openings: 1 

Hours per week: 20-25 hours per week.  

Must be available to work a minimum of 4 days a week and at least 5 hours per day between 8am and 5pm. 

Starting Pay: $15-17/hour depending upon experience
