What You'll Do

This position provides support for the Physics Department's Student Shop and the student shop course. The student shop course provides an introduction to the proper use of hand tools, milling machines, lathes, saws, drill presses, and the belt sander. The course teaches students the skills needed to make, repair, or retrofit scientific instruments and supporting equipment for research labs. The Physics Student Shop is a resource for University of Michigan undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty and staff.

All work is performed on-site at the Ann Arbor campus. Hybrid and remote work modes are not available.

Responsibilities*

Student Shop Oversight (40%)

  • Reinforce concepts taught in the shop class and provides guidance to students working to complete the required project(s)
  • Provide oversight for students working on independent projects in the student shop
  • Enforces all relevant processes and procedures for operating the student shop

Instructional Support (25%)

  • Assist with the student shop course by working side-by-side with students during class time 
  • Demonstrate proper use of equipment
  • Coach students completing their required course projects

Operations (25%)

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment
  • Ensure adequate supply inventory
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment

Administrative responsibilities (10%)

  • Coordinate student registration, maintain a schedule of classes, communicate with students via email, maintain accurate records of students certified to use the shop
  • Complete monthly and annual reports on student shop usage and course completion

This position reports directly to the Scientific Instrument Shop Manager. 

Required Qualifications*

  • 1-3 years of experience in a machine shop environment
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate a variety of machining and fabrication equipment
  • Ability to accurately follow plans and drawings for equipment fabrication
  • Ability to work and interact in a professional and effective manner
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to effectively move equipment and materials weighing 50 pounds or more 

Modes of Work

This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the University Staff United (USU), which represents bargaining unit members in all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
