Job Summary

The Office of Marketing and Communications seeks a motivated and creative student worker to join our team. The position will provide first-hand experience in social media content strategy, management, development and production. Applicants must be avid and sophisticated social media consumers and users and familiar with and have experience with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok in order to brainstorm and create engaging content for UM-Flint's followers across all platforms. The person selected for this position will collaborate with the office?s social media specialist on long-term projects, such as campaign strategy, and short-term projects, such as monitoring analytics.

Students who wish to apply for this position should be sophomores, juniors or seniors and preferably have strong interests and skills in marketing, content creation, public relations and/or social media. Applicants should also have an inherent curiosity in researching emerging social media trends and evaluating their potential use at UM-Flint.

Responsibilities*

Social Media:

  • Participate in brainstorming sessions for content across various social media platforms, with a heavy focus on short-form videos and TikTok.
  • Produce videos to portray UM-Flint's brand in a positive light.
  • Create content for UM-Flint's official social media channels.
  • Collaborate with the social media specialist and photographer/videographer on content creation.
  • Write captions for social media posts that are appropriate to our audience and platform.
  • Monitor competitors and peers for trends.
  • Understanding of the role of photography, graphics and videography in social media engagement and content creation.
  • Attention to Best Practices:
    • Keep an eye out for social media trends and issues of note in platforms (mainly TikTok). Brainstorm ways we can incorporate those themes in our social media.
    • Assist with reviewing campus partner social media channels and identifying opportunities to collaborate and amplify news, activities, and events.

Event Coverage & Schedule Flexibility

  • Attending major campus events to capture photo and video content for social media.
  • Assisting with live or real-time content coverage such as Instagram Stories, short-form video, and behind-the-scenes content.
  • Supporting content coverage at major events, including:
    • Move-In Day.
    • Commencement ceremonies.
    • Campus open houses.
    • Student life events and campus programming. 
    • Signature university events and celebrations (such as Giving Blueday, Giving Tuesday, MLK Day, Fall Welcome Back events, Homecoming, Sporting events, Late Night Breakfast, etc.). 

Required Qualifications*

Students who wish to apply for this position should be sophomores, juniors or seniors and preferably have strong interests and skills in marketing, content creation, public relations and/or social media. 

Applicants should also have an inherent curiosity in researching emerging social media trends and evaluating their potential use at UM-Flint.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an eye for detail and creativity.
  • Proficiency in using social media platforms and content management systems.
  • Basic understanding of digital marketing principles and practices.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Familiarity with graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with video editing tools (both in-app and dedicated applications like Adobe Premiere) is preferred.
  • Demonstrate reliability and flexibility to assist during high-impact university events when coverage is needed.
  • Being comfortable interacting with students, staff and event attendees when capturing content.

Work Schedule

Part-time, flexible hours to accommodate the student's academic schedule. Approximately 10-15 hours per week.

Modes of Work

Hybrid
The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.

Background Screening
