Job Summary

The Department of Language, Culture, and the Arts, and the Composition and Rhetoric discipline in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters (CASL) invites applicants for a LEO Lecturer I, non-tenure-track appointment which begins August 26, 2026, through December 31, 2026, for the Fall 2026 term. Contractual full-time rate per term is $25,500; term salary is dependent on number of courses taught and course effort percentage, up to 100% appointment for the Fall 2026 term. The successful candidate will be comfortable teaching face-to face, hybrid, and asynchronous/online modalities, such as:

 

COMP 105: Writing and Rhetoric I, a 3 credit-hour course at 25% effort

Focuses on the study and practice of writing and rhetoric, with special emphasis on the writing process. Students write and read critically a range of texts and consider academic and non-academic genres and conventions.

 

COMP 106: Writing and Rhetoric II, a 3 credit-hour course at 25% effort

Focuses on the study of writing and rhetoric through composing a range of researched texts. Students study the rhetorical choices effective for writing in different media, and learn practical strategies for academic inquiry and for giving useful feedback in response to the writing of others

 

COMP 270: Technical Writing for Engineers, a 3 credit-hour course at 25% effort

An equivalent course to COMP 106. Instruction and practice in designing technical reports. Students study the rhetorical problems facing professional engineers and learn practical strategies for analyzing and communicating technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.

 

COMP 280 Business Writing & Rhetoric, a 3 credit-hour course at 25% effort

An equivalent course to COMP 106. Instruction and practice in composing and designing business documents, including abstracts, memos, email, letters, reports, resumes, proposals, and slide presentations.

 

The appointment is for one semester only, with a possibility of reappointment for future terms.

Required Qualifications*

M.A. in composition and rhetoric, professional writing, or a related field. Evidence of excellence in teaching first-year writing in multiple modes. 

Desired Qualifications*

Experience working with second-language or multilingual writers. Experience teaching in computer-mediated environments.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
