Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Office of Enrollment Management (OEM) manages U-M's enrollment function to efficiently optimize students' experiences throughout their engagement, from prospect to alumni. The division collaborates with campus partners, faculty, and staff in support of the university's mission.

OEM comprises a dedicated team of more than 200 full-time staff members and more than 400 additional student and temporary staff and is structured in five operational units - the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of New Student Programs, the Office of the Registrar, and OEM Administration. OEM strives to provide excellence in access and support to inspiring learners who will challenge the present and enrich the future.

Job Summary

The Marketing and Communications (MarCom) team within the Office of Enrollment Management (OEM) is looking for an experienced Multimedia Designer who will develop engaging materials for multiple target audiences. The work of the Multimedia Designer will help connect the University of Michigan with prospective students, and their families, and current U-M students, campus stakeholders and community members. 

The Multimedia Designer collaborates with OEM MarCom team members on developing tactics that align with the University of Michigan brand and encourage a pool of talented students to apply to and enroll at U-M; facilitate positive, meaningful relationships among target audiences and the university; aid in communicating affordability and access at U-M; and showcase the U-M experience. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications, the Multimedia Designer will support the development and coordination of impactful communications and marketing initiatives.

Responsibilities*

  • Understand the unique profiles of multiple target audiences including prospective students, their parents/families, high school counselors, current students, U-M faculty and staff, and other influencers.
  • Conceptualize, design and produce a portfolio of impactful high-end multimedia, print and display projects and campaigns  including viewbooks, posters, direct mail, brochures, websites, social media graphics, emails, displays, videos, and presentations.
  • Design visual identities, infographics, and data visualization elements using a strong design and typography sensibility.
  • Produce HTML content in collaboration with the web and CRM administrators.
  • Take projects from concept development to final execution, presenting ideas and status throughout the process and once selected, preparing final files for production. 
  • Manage OEM brand standards, developing materials to support their use across the division, including logo development, presentations, templates, and promotional materials.
  • Oversee the OEM digital media library, including taking campus photos, providing creative direction on photo shoots and developing a concise library of images that convey the U-M brand for divisional use using the university's Digital Asset Collective (DAC).
  • Supervise a student employee, who contributes design work for the OEM units, providing guidance and consultation on branding, visual identity, and design principles.
  • When needed, provide creative direction to additional vendors on OEM design projects.
  • Contribute to the creative process, and help develop and implement a shared, well-rounded vision for OEM communications.
  • Assess new technologies, standards and trends, and contribute to strategy formulation for the most effective message delivery.
  • Make an ongoing commitment to improving skills, acquiring new technical knowledge, and staying informed of innovative design trends.
  • Ensure multimedia content aligns with accessibility standards for inclusive design.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design or related field required with three years of multimedia design experience.

  • Working knowledge of graphic design principles and practices: layout, typography, working within brand standards, use of tone and color, and using imagery in storytelling, with a demonstrated attention to detail and a clear point of view. 

  • Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (especially Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and fluent in HTML design principles and Microsoft Office Suite in a Mac environment, particularly PowerPoint and Google Office Suite. 

  • Experience presenting creative sketches, concepts and storyboards. 

  • Experience with organizing and maintaining media assets and versions effectively and efficiently, and familiarity with a digital asset management tool.

  • Must understand all phases of print production including prepress techniques, file prep, color management/proofing and distribution and basic understanding of USPS mailing standards.

  • Proven commitment to quality; proven problem solving, decision making and time management skills; optimal organizational skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

  • Must be professional, service oriented, creative, self-motivated, highly organized, team player that is technically skilled and enjoys collaborations with a wide variety of constituencies.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

The Office of Enrollment Management requires a hybrid work arrangement of minimally three days on-site and two remote days. Thursdays are required as an on-site workday for all. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and subject to change dependent on the business needs throughout the course of employment.
