Responsibilities*

  • Serve as finance team member in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
  • Work closely and proactively with PIs to monitor budgets and develop forecasts and reports for their entire funding portfolio (sponsored and non-sponsored), analyze and explain variances, and provide suggestions and offer solutions to problems
  • Reconcile assigned accounts including general, designated, gift, DAF and sponsored fund types on a monthly basis and ensure compliance with Medical School and sponsor guidelines; investigate and resolve any issues, monitor subcontracts and track encumbrances
  • Request invoicing on sponsored projects and monitor aging receivables
  • Develop and run queries using Business Objects in the Financial Data Warehouse and prepare reports
  • Request and open non-sponsored accounts and establish subaccounts for sponsored projects, complete budget allocations
  • Prepare no cost time extension and other post award change requests, assist with rebudgeting, complete closeouts
  • Create and process journal entries
  • Review and approve clinical trial human subject payments
  • Prepare responses to inquiries, assist with the preparation of various financial reports and documents
  • Interpret regulations and guidelines of funding, ensure the appropriateness of expenses and compliance with sponsor; Michigan Medicine and University guidelines
  • Additional duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or in a business-related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 3 or more years of experience in post-award research administration
  • Extensive knowledge and experience using Excel
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively with a high degree of accuracy while working in an environment of fluctuating priorities and interruptions
  • Extremely detail oriented with the ability to recognize and investigate data anomalies
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to build successful relationships with faculty and staff at all levels
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team

Desired Qualifications*

  • Familiarity and experience with University administrative and business tools such as Business Objects, MReports and other MPathways systems, Emburse, and eRPM; knowledge of U-M organizational structure.

This position is eligible for a remote work arrangement.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
