Job Summary
You will manage all public-facing forms of media for the Michigan Marching and Athletic Bands to promote programs, research, and influence. The goal of this position is to expand audience engagement, help the MMB gain visibility with partners and media outlets, promote events, and recruit new students. You will develop all facets of the MMB's PR strategy, including social media, managing the external website, and live event coverage; provide reports and information necessary to evaluate and refine those plans moving forward. You will work directly with the other MMB and SMTD staff and faculty to implement a comprehensive social media and communications program. You have a firm understanding of social media technologies and excellent digital design understanding. You will lead a team of MMB students who will create projects in the realms of graphic design, journalism, video production, and social content creation.
Responsibilities*
- In partnership with MMB faculty and staff, develop social media projects and strategies; design content to enhance the Michigan Marching and Athletic Bands' brand.
- Work with other team members in the coordination and implementation of marketing and communication efforts in strategic projects such as recruiting, partnership engagement, fund development, and alumni outreach.
- Manage multiple marketing and communications projects to meet organizational and audience needs using digital and print media, presentations, event materials, newsletters, advertising, and paid social media investments, campaigns, and placements.
- Be the daily content manager and developer for the Michigan Marching and Athletic Bands social channels, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
- Update the external MMB website with relevant information on auditions, events, history, student stores, and more.
- Recruit new MMB students, manage all audition communications, compile audition submissions, and send all information to MMB staff.
- Ensure social media content upholds the values of a diverse community and these materials reflect best practices for accessibility.
- Create a content/editorial calendar to guarantee a steady flow of original and curated content to different audiences.
- Oversee the student Marketing and Information Staff, including regular meetings to prioritize projects and develop roadmaps for execution of the content calendar.
- Track digital marketing, website, and social media analytics; analyze the effectiveness of efforts and make recommendations for improvement.
- Monitor important partners, alumni, and faculty posts to identify opportunities for collaboration and amplification.
- Create databases, email, and other contact lists for marketing and communications plans with other MMB staff.
- Design and publish MMB email newsletters for Game Days and other important updates.
- Work collaboratively to ensure photo/video coverage of MMB activities.
- Participate in SMTD and University groups as a designated liaison for the MMB, and serve as primary communications contact for MMB publicity.
- Develop relationships with appropriate media partners and outlets, and manage their engagement in the promotion and awareness of MMB programs and activities.
- Execute Facebook and YouTube livestreams with the assistance of U-M and SMTD ITS.
- Operate the multimedia components of the MMB's rehearsal site (cameras, audio, video board) and help troubleshoot and train other users in its use.
- Create content for digital interactive signage in Revelli Hall, and be familiar with their operating software.
- Moderate comments on all MMB social media platforms and remove inflammatory ones.
- Approve MMB student designs for section merchandise, and manage the back end of the honorary band fraternity and sororities (KKY/TBS)-run online shop.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the tasks enumerated above.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, graphic design, or related field. 2+ years of experience managing a social media campaign.
- Experience managing a digital marketing and social media team.
- Portfolio of work that is original, creative, and imaginative.
- Experience in graphic design, photography, and videography.
- Demonstrated understanding of the "voice" used on different social media platforms and its strategic use for brand awareness, storytelling, and customer service.
- Ability to work on deadlines and handle several projects at once in a fast paced environment.
- Familiarity with social media best practices and experience using social media analytics.
- Experience using web-based technologies such as Google Analytics, other media analytics, BandWindow, and Constant Contact. Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Google applications, Adobe Creative Suite, and other tools and systems in a Mac-based environment.
- Awareness and implementation of best practices in promoting and working with a diverse group of people; comfortable working with individuals of all backgrounds and at all organizational levels.
- Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours as needed to meet departmental demands, including seasonal fluctuations.
- Experience participating in marching band preferred.
- Experience in web page SEO optimization, including headlines, meta tags, page titles, alt tags, and descriptions.
- An awareness of the Michigan Marching and Athletic Bands or similar bands is a positive.
