Job Summary
The Phlebotomist supports the delivery of patient care by obtaining blood specimens and assisting with patient flow in a fast-paced occupational health setting. This role collaborates with Occupational Health Services staff to ensure efficient clinic operations and partners with Health System and Campus departments to ensure employees are managed in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities*
- Perform phlebotomy procedures using venipuncture and microcapillary collection techniques for an adult population.
- Verify patient identity using approved identification protocols prior to specimen collection.
- Utilize positive patient identification systems and generate accurate specimen labels.
- Collect, handle, and process blood specimens in accordance with laboratory standards and safety guidelines.
- Monitor and manage laboratory orders using electronic systems (e.g., Enterprise Health, Laboratory Information System, MI-Chart).
- Communicate effectively with clinical staff regarding unsuccessful collections, delays, or specimen issues.
- Assist in resolving problems related to specimens, test orders, and laboratory requests.
- Maintain quality control standards and adhere to established clinical and safety protocols.
- Respond to medical emergencies (codes) in accordance with organizational procedures.
- Support regulatory readiness, including participation in audits and compliance activities.
- Assist with inventory management, stocking, and ordering of laboratory supplies.
- Contribute to efficient patient flow and overall clinic operations.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
Required Qualifications*
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a phlebotomy training program or equivalent experience.
- Current certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (e.g., ASCP, NHA) preferred or required per organizational policy.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Desired Qualifications*
- Experience working in a clinical or outpatient setting preferred.

Modes of Work

Work Schedule
4 10-hour Shifts 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday
This position will work primarily at out South Industrial Clinic and our MedInn Main Hospital clinic as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques, specimen handling, and infection control practices.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records and laboratory information systems.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

- Ability to prioritize tasks and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
- Problem-solving skills with the ability to address specimen and workflow issues.
- WORKING CONDITIONS
- Fast-paced outpatient clinical environment.
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials.
- Requires adherence to standard precautions and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- Manual dexterity required for performing venipuncture and handling specimens.
- Ability to lift and move supplies (up to 25 pounds).
Visual acuity and fine motor skills are necessary for specimen collection and labeling.
Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
