Job Summary
The University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry is seeking a part-time temporary Research Assistant I to join our dynamic and supportive research team at a top-tier academic medical center. This role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with human subjects research, clinical trial operations, and sleep study procedures as part of a Federally funded clinical trial examining a novel therapy's effect on sleep quality for people who use cannabis to manage insomnia. You will learn more about substance use, sleep science, and mental health, while accessing University of Michigan resources for professional development.
Responsibilities*
This part-time temporary Research Assistant role focuses on in-person evening and overnight support for sleep laboratory study visits. Main duties include preparing laboratory spaces, welcoming and assisting study participants, supporting data collection, and collaborating with a sleep technician. You will play a key part in ensuring a smooth participant experience and maintaining the integrity of research data.
Participant Engagement & Data Collection (40%)
- Welcome participants, complete check-in procedures, and orient them to the lab
- Collect urine drug screens and brief surveys
- Support the sleep technician during participant hook-up
Participant Onboarding & Technology Support (30%)
- Arrive ahead of the participant to set up study records in sleep study software
- Assist participants in setting up the Fitbit app on their phone for data collection
Equipment and Room Preparation (20%)
- Prepare laboratory space and equipment for sleep study sessions
- Ensure supplies are stocked and organized
- Reset the room between participants as needed
Participant Scheduling (10%)
- Coordinate laboratory appointments during daytime hours in collaboration with the study coordinator
Required Qualifications*
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Attention to detail and ability to follow study protocols
- Ability to work independently as well as within a team
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with research participants
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse range of people, as this project serves a widespread and vulnerable population
- Reliability for evening shifts
Desired Qualifications*
- Graduation from a college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- A background in research methods and/or clinical settings
- Experience using MS Excel, Access, and REDCap is preferred
- Flexibility in order to meet project deadlines and goals
- Previous experience in human subjects research, clinical work, or related fields is a plus (but not required)
Modes of Work

Work Schedule
- Weekly hours: 6-8 hours (some weeks may have up to 12 hours available with advanced notice)
- Part-time; not eligible for full-time appointment
- Friday through Tuesday Schedule.
Work Locations
This is an in-person position located at one of Michigan Medicine's off campus locations in Ann Arbor, MI. This position is not available for remote work.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
