Job Summary
The Administrative Director for Operations, Ancillary Services, and Safety at U-M Health provides strategic and operational leadership for the administrative support infrastructure serving over a dozen Support Services and Supply Chain operational areas at the Academic Medical Center (AMC). This role oversees teams providing centralized human resources, payroll, finance, project management, and analytical support and serves as a partner to operational leaders on resource planning, financial stewardship, and workforce strategy. The Administrative Director also oversees Allied Health programs, workforce optimization efforts, paging and information services, the Project Management Office (PMO), and the student intern and fellow programs for Operations, Ancillary Services, and Safety areas, ensuring these functions are aligned to organizational priorities, operate efficiently, and deliver measurable value.
This position reports to the Associate Chief Operating Officer for Operations, Ancillary Services, and Safety.
Responsibilities*
- Provide administrative leadership for Support Services and Supply Chain areas, including oversight of the administrative support team (finance, HR, payroll), Allied Health programs, Paging and Information Services, and student intern/fellow programs; set standards and ensure outcomes align with organizational goals.
- Lead and develop a high-performing team (financial, administrative, and project management), including hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and succession planning.
- Ensure strong financial stewardship across Support Services and Supply Chain, including annual budget development, forecasting, variance analysis, and decision support through reporting, trend analysis, and process standardization.
- Oversee HR/payroll support and Workforce Optimization, including workforce planning, staffing models, productivity metrics, position control practices, and schedule optimization, ensuring consistent policy application and operational feasibility.
- Direct the PMO, including project intake/prioritization, resourcing, execution, governance, benefits realization, and change management for cross-functional initiatives.
- Maintain effective internal controls and compliance, including annual gap analyses and sub-certification, and drive standardization through policies, procedures, and continuous improvement.
- Develop and sustain dashboards and routine performance reporting; improve data quality and consistency through clear definitions, standards, and validation routines.
- Partner with departmental leadership to develop, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, and guidelines that improve standardization, transparency, and efficiency across Support Services.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or other related field and 7+ years of progressively responsible administrative experience.
- Experience supervising a team of 3 or more employees across diverse subject areas.
- Experience in coaching, mentoring, and providing guidance to team members.
- Leadership experience and the ability to manage, inspire, and guide teams.
- Adaptability to changing priorities and requirements.
- Strong analytical ability to for data-driven decision making and performance monitoring.
- Proven ability to manage multiple competing priorities with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and levels of leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to strategize at both granular and high-level perspectives.
Desired Qualifications*
- Master's degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or other related field.
- Project Management Professional Certification.
- Knowledge of the University of Michigan's policies and procedures, including those specifically impacting Michigan Medicine.
- Experience working with contracts and collective bargaining agreements.
