Job Summary

The Department of Environment, Health & Safety is seeking an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist to provide industrial hygiene and occupational safety services to University of Michigan organizational units, specifically, Athletics, Botanical Gardens, School of Music Theater and Dance (SMTD), and Art and Architecture.  This position will also complete and coordinate survey and abatement activities for renovation and construction projects.

 

Services include health, safety, and environmental review of work tasks and work locations across the campus; respond to and investigate safety and health related concerns, make appropriate recommendations with written documentation to departmental managers and union representatives, and follow-up action. Ability to develop and deliver dynamic employee training based on regulatory requirements and written internal safety programs; Review injury/illness data to prepare statistical reports; Prepare special and periodic reports, guidelines, manuals, newsletters, summaries, and bulletins. Survey building materials for asbestos and lead and prepare reports. Perform emergency response for hazardous materials which may include biological, chemical, or radioactive substances.

Required Qualifications*

  • A bachelor's degree in occupational health, safety, chemical sciences, or a related scientific or engineering field or other equivalent work experience in the health and safety field.
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in administering occupational health and safety programs.
  • Considerable knowledge of occupational health, safety, environmental, or engineering principles and practices, and rules/regulations.
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA & MIOSHA rules and regulations.
  • Ability to develop and deliver dynamic employee training programs.
  • Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Office computer applications.
  • Work independently, exercise initiative and judgment, and provide follow through with customers.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to obtain a commercial driver's license may be necessary.
  • Must be able to pass physical examination to allow for emergency response and wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.

Desired Qualifications*

  • A master's degree in occupational health, safety, chemical sciences, or a related scientific or engineering field.
  • Some experience in program development and EHS project management.
  • Accreditation as a State of Michigan Asbestos Inspector.
  • Appropriate professional certification such as Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager or Professional Engineer is highly desirable.
  • Professional affiliations and participation in professional conferences, including presentation and committee work is desirable.

Work Schedule

M-F daytime hours. Additional off-shift work hours will occasionally be required to conduct employee training, respond to emergencies or other time sensitive/critical events.
