Job Summary

The D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion is a 12-story hospital that will house 264 private rooms capable of converting to intensive care; a state-of-the-art neurosciences center; and high-level, specialty care services for cardiovascular and thoracic patients, along with advanced imaging. The 690,000-square-foot hospital which also features 20 surgical and three interventional radiology suites is being constructed adjacent to the Frankel Cardiovascular Center, with plans for bridge and tunnel connections to existing inpatient care facilities. 

Responsibilities*

This 48 bed unit on Pavilion 8 provides care to neurology and neurosurgery patients with the following diagnoses: brain and spinal cord tumors, epilepsy, stroke, cerebral aneurysm, neuropathy, Myasthenia Gravis, head and spinal cord trauma.

  • Provide expert nursing care to the patients on Pavilion 8.
  • Provide clinical expertise in a consultative role to nursing staff.
  • Assess, design, and conduct in-service presentations and competencies for nursing staff regarding clinical nursing care and the learning needs of the adult patient population.
  • Investigate, design, evaluate, and modify as necessary nursing care programs in collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Specialist, Clinical Nurse Supervisor and Clinical Nursing Director.
  • To develop, implement, coordinate and evaluate new employee orientation programs.
  • To identify Pavilion 8?s ongoing staff educational needs and facilitate in-services as appropriate to the needs of the nursing team.  
  • Perform unit audits related to quality improvement initiatives.
  • Actively participate in the orientation program for staff, including scheduling, preceptor development and training, and precepting nurses and assistive personnel. 
  • Membership and participation on nursing and hospital wide committees.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of unit quality improvement programs and activities in collaboration with the Pavilion 8 tea
  • To demonstrate the clinical nursing role through direct patient care, role modeling, and consultation to nursing and other members of the health care team.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring for the Pavilion 8 staff.
  • The staffing component of this role will reflect clinical as well as educational needs

Required Qualifications*

  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing or equivalent education and experience.
  • Three (3) or more years of recent RN experience with neurology patients (within last 4 years).
  • Two (2) or more years recent experience as a clinical preceptor (within last 3 years).
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word and Powerpoint.

  • Certification applicable to adult patient population served by this unit.
  • Excellent leadership skills in facilitating group dynamic and team development.
  • Excellent charge nurse skills as demonstrated by strong organization, which includes proficient use of email Outlook and Microsoft Word and Power point.
  • Demonstrated evidence of teaching experience with Adult Acute Care patient population within the last year.
  • Participation in continuous quality improvement (CQI) efforts
  • Supportive of changes recommended through CQI process
  • High level of self-motivation and commitment to improving patient outcomes
  • Demonstrated evidence within the last year of teaching experiences in post operative care.

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:
This UMPNC RN posting is posted under the Role-Specific Advancement Model (RSAM) as:
ENC- COMPETENT.
Actual RSAM LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.
RSAM levels range from ENC-COMPETENT to ENC-EXPERT TO ENC-MASTERY

Work Schedule

Hours: 36 hours/week- may include weekend shifts to meet unit educational needs.
Shift: Night shift, flexibility required to meet unit educational needs.
