CAEN is the central information technology services department for the University of Michigan College of Engineering, providing comprehensive IT resources to support educational, research, and administrative needs.

CAEN manages computer labs, instructional technology in engineering classrooms, high-performance research computing resources, and an extensive library of engineering-specific software applications. Job Summary

The CAEN Operations Coordinator is a forward-thinking role that ensures smooth day-to-day operations of instructional computing labs, data centers, and network infrastructure within the College of Engineering. This position provides daily leadership to a team of student employees and collaborates closely with the other CAEN and College staff, and the ITS UMnet team to plan and execute deployments and upgrades. The coordinator is responsible for sustaining reliable, secure, and efficient computing and networking environments for faculty, staff, and students. The position will report to CAEN's Director of IT Operations.

Responsibilities*

In this job, you will:

  • Manage daily operations of student computer labs, and data centers, including system monitoring, facility inspections, and trouble ticket coordination.
  • Determine networking requirements, coordinate installations, and work with ITS and campus network operators to ensure College-specific needs are met
  • Plan and execute equipment lifecycle management for labs, data centers, and network infrastructure, including upgrades, replacements, and asset tracking.
  • Represent College IT needs at construction projects, and document processes, configurations, and network infrastructure.
  • Supervise student employees, including hiring, training, and performance management.
  • Prepare operational reports and recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency and service delivery

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three or more years of experience in IT operations servicing servers, networks, and on-site computer systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with network fundamentals and deployment of computing resources in a lab or data center environment.
  • Experience leading or mentoring student staff or junior team members, and a commitment to fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and coordinate IT deployments and maintenance activities.
  • Strong organizational and troubleshooting skills; able to manage multiple priorities and track issues to resolution.
  • Experience working in a team environment with cross-functional collaboration (e.g., Facilities, ITS, Faculty).

Desired Qualifications*

  • Advanced degree in a related field.
  • Professional certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Server+.
  • Familiar with operating systems administration (Windows and/or Linux), 
  • Experience with network monitoring systems.
  • Familiarity with higher-education IT environments and working knowledge of University of Michigan networking and IT policies.
  • Experience using TeamDynamix for ticketing and incident tracking.
  • Familiarity in the use of AI to optimize operations and enhance workflows.
  • Experience with MDM tools for managing distributed devices.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Onsite:  The work requires a fully onsite presence.
