Job Summary

Basic Function and Responsibilities

The primary goal of the position is to ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient and family centered-care, meet or exceed regulatory and professional standards, and foster an environment of continuous improvement and professional excellence across the Troy Medical Campus. Serves as the primary nursing partner to physician and administrative executive leadership for Troy Medical Campus performance and strategy execution. As a member of the Troy Medical Campus leadership team, participates in the planning and coordination of care delivery for patients on the Troy campus and across the health system. Partners with Central Services, Shared Services, and Clinical Department leaders to proactively identify, resolve, and communicate issues related to safety, quality, access, experience, and operations. Partners with enterprise functions (e.g., Accreditation, Patient Experience, Infection Prevention, Compliance) to ensure regulatory readiness and achievement of key performance indicators. 

Responsible for the direct management and nursing leadership functions of nursing and clinical assistive personnel services across multiple specialty clinics, infusion center, surgical and procedural services and other clinical services. Initiates and implements policies, program planning, reimbursement models, and evaluation of clinical services across the campus. Maximizes patient and staff satisfaction with human systems and material resources. 

Organizational Relationships

  • Reports to: Associate Chief Nursing Officer/Associate Chief Operating Officer, Oakland County (ACNO/ACCO). Indirectly reports to the Chief Nurse and Operations Executive, UMH.

  • Collaborates with: The Administrative Director and Medical Directors across the Troy Medical Campus and Medical, Nursing, Administrative and Clinical Department leadership across the health system.
  • Supervises: Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Medical Assistants (MAs) and others involved in clinical patient services.

Responsibilities*

 

  • Partners with the senior leader team to operationalize enterprise strategy for the Troy Campus by coordinating cross-functional efforts, implementing integrated action plans, monitoring progress, and ensuring execution aligns with strategic and operational objectives.
  • Represents Troy Campus on enterprise committees, nursing community and governance bodies. 
  • Advises executive leadership on campus performance, risks, and opportunities.
  • Partners with, and participates in, the Troy Executive Oversight Committee in setting quality, access, and patient care priorities that aligns with enterprise strategy and community focus.
  • Partner with service line leadership to direct strategic nursing priorities and deploy innovative initiatives across multiple clinical services including perioperative and procedural areas.

  • Foster collaborative partnerships with Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to drive high-quality, patient-centered care delivery, operational excellence, and seamless care coordination across the site and other health system locations as needed.

  • Leads and coordinates the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of all levels of nurses and clinical assistive personnel, collaborating within the collective bargaining agreements. Works collaboratively with leadership teams in the hiring process. 

  • Oversees and provides supervision, counsel, discipline and performance evaluation of nursing leadership with feedback from administrators, medical staff and operations leaders.  
  • Oversees the professional development of nurses and the development and training in clinical skills of all nursing and clinical assistive staff. 
  • Provide leadership for the implementation of university standard practices and development, implementation and evaluation of standards of practice and for interdisciplinary clinical guidelines, using evidence-based best practices and following recognized professional organizational standards of practice. 
  • In collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team, identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient populations and budgetary requirements, and appropriate to the scope of a variety of roles. 
  • Working collaboratively with the leadership team, identify and resolve unit operational problems, implement process improvements (using LEAN techniques), and ensure standard work across clinical services. 
  • Participate in and coordinate the development, implementation and evaluation of multi-disciplinary patient care activities and programs.
  • Provides leadership, assists and advises with all members of the leadership team to satisfy all regulatory standards.
  • Continuously seeks education and applies knowledge of payer programs such as bundled payments and other reimbursement models relevant to product or service line patient populations.
  • Represent nursing services in interdisciplinary planning and problem-solving regarding patient care.
  • Evaluate and manage clinical equipment and recommend necessary expenditures.
  • Assure compliance with regulatory, legal, and patient care and safety programs. 

Required Qualifications*

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in Michigan. 
  • Required Educational Requirement: 
    • Master's degree in Nursing or Health Care Administration, Public Health, Business or related field (a Juris Doctor degree may be considered) 
    • If Master's degree is not in Nursing, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required 
  • Four (4) or more years of progressively responsible ambulatory care nursing experience.
  • Four (4) or more years of demonstrated competence and leadership in an ambulatory care management role are necessary.
  • Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within one (1) year of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC).  Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Desired Qualifications*

  • Certification in clinic specialty or Nurse Executive
  • Experience with Advanced Practice Providers (APPs)
  • Broad human resources, financial, and program management experience
  • Proficiency with system applications such as Epic, staffing systems and other Michigan Medicine applications
  • Experience in Lean techniques, operations improvement, marketing and/or strategic planning
  • Knowledge of Michigan Medicine policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary leadership team
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, self-confidence and assertiveness in a variety of contexts
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate expectations, to lead by actions as well as words, to build consensus and to share credit for success
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead diverse, multi-disciplinary groups

Modes of Work

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 hours per week. Specific hours and days to be determined upon hire.

Location: Troy Medical Campus. Occasional need to travel to other University of Michigan Health locations.

Performance Evaluation

Based on Associate Chief Nursing Officer/Associate Chief Operating Officer assessment of defined operational, financial, quality, and engagement metrics.
