Job Summary

Basic functions and responsibilities

Under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, perform scientific research in the field of Pediatric Rheumatology.  Participate in a supervisory role for junior research staff and support personnel.  Participate in extra-mural grant writing and academic authorship.  Duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop, design, and conduct research experiments under the direction of the PI mentor

  • Conduct research elucidating the role of BIRC3 in the generation of inflammatory bowel disease.  Examining the signaling pathways that play a role in allergic skin inflammation. 

  • Participate in the supervision of laboratory technicians and students under the direction of the PI mentor

  • Participate in the writing of grants and scientific papers, presentations at meetings, and generating data for grants

It is the Department's expectation for Research Investigator to generate peer-reviewed publications of their current work and/or individual salary support on sponsored funds by the end of the fourth year of the Research Investigator appointment.  Peer-reviewed publications are required for advancement to the Research Scientist track.  Peer-reviewed publications along with plans and development for independent funding are required for advancement to the Research Professor track.

Supervision received

Direction is received from the Principal Investigator. Staff members in this classification are expected to work independently and in collaboration with other laboratory personnel, regularly exercise good judgment in setting priorities, resolving operational problems, and the applications of methods, procedures and policies.

Supervision exercised

Functional supervision may be exercised over lab assistants, students, and other junior personnel.

Required Qualifications*

Qualifications

Required:

  • PhD degree and at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience in a recognized field of science directly related to the position

  • Seven-ten years of directly related laboratory experience, especially human genetic, mutational analysis, cellular immunology, and signal transduction

  • Exceptional work ethic in a highly competitive environment

  • Ability to communicate clearly the results of his/her experiments to other team members

  • Strong knowledge of genetics and molecular biology

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, GraphPad Prism, and other research computing applications

  • Familiarity with basic laboratory instrumentation and maintenance of laboratory equipment

  • Hands on skills and experience with all standard molecular and cell biology techniques, e.g., PCR, cloning, microscopy, western blotting

  • Evidence of qualification is provided by previous employment, prior grant submissions, publications, references, performance evaluation, and personal interview
