Job Summary

The Athletic Trainer Intern will work directly with sport administration, coaches, physicians, athletic counseling and sports psychology personnel, sports dieticians, strength and conditioning personnel, and other allied health personnel to deliver comprehensive healthcare and lifetime wellness services for University of Michigan student-athletes. The Athletic Trainer Intern will have a wide-range of clinical and administrative daily responsibilities to include the prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of student-athletes; pre-participation physicals; inventory management of supplies and equipment; maintaining medical records; completing required insurance claims; daily interaction, communication, and relationship building with coaching staff, strength and conditioning and sports performance personnel, physicians, fellow athletic trainers, other members of the medical community, and athletic administration; attending team practices and events; supervising athletic training students; assisting with various administrative duties; and performing other duties as assigned.

This position will work with the Men's and Women's Basketball and Golf programs while helping to fill coverage gaps throughout the athletic medicine department.    This position has an expected start date of 8/1/2026 and will last for 10 months.

Responsibilities*

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as the primary medical contact and liaison between members of the coaching staff, student-athletes, parents, physicians, members of the Student-Athlete Health & Welfare Team, other allied health personnel, sport administration, and others for the assigned sport(s).
  • Provide a high level of customer service and communication at all times to all entities.
  • Clinical application and administration of comprehensive health care and lifetime wellness services for student-athletes as assigned to include the prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses under the supervision of team physicians.
  • Attend assigned team practices, competitions, strength and conditioning sessions, and other team events as needed and/or directed.
  • Maintain a safe environment for student-athletes to include decision-making involving the ability of student-athletes to safely return to practice or competition following an injury and/or illness and communicate participation status with the appropriate personnel.
  • Use of athletic management systems for medical documentation and/or athlete monitoring device software to produce health care outcomes and quality improvement projects.
  • Counseling and education of student-athletes.
  • Coordination of medical coverage for various athletic events, including Big 10 and NCAA Championship events.
  • Assist with University and NCAA Substance Abuse Testing as directed.
  • Assist with the organization, administration, inventory, and staffing of athletic training facilities.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures as defined by the NCAA, Big 10 Conference, University of Michigan, and University of Michigan Athletics.
  • Adhere to the Code of Ethics and credentialing requirements of the Board of Certification Athletic Training (BOC) and the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).
  • Act as liaison with other members of the athletic department interdisciplinary team.
  • Represent the University of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletics at University, State, Regional, and national conferences and/or meetings as assigned.
  • Assist with recruitment and retention of highly qualified and competent Student Athlete Heath and Welfare personnel at all levels.

  • Assist with the research and determination of current and future needs within the department and assist with the development of detailed proposals as directed.
  • Ensure the annual budget through efficient financial management.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Assist in special projects, committees, or other initiatives as assigned.
  • Assist in the onboarding and training of new athletic training employees.
     

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervision, education, and preceptor of students enrolled in the pre-professional athletic training education program.

Travel:

  • Travel with assigned team(s) as needed and/or directed.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's Degree in athletic training or a related field.
  • Certification through Board of Certification Athletic Training (BOC).
  • Eligible for athletic training licensure by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).

  • Compliance and understanding of Big Ten Conference and NCAA rules.
  • Ability to meet Continuing Education requirements as established by the Athletic Training Board of Certification (BOC) and the State of Michigan.

  • Ability to follow policies and procedures set forth by the NCAA, Big Ten Conference, University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, coaches, student-athletes, physicians, and other allied health personnel.
  • Must possess problem-solving and critical thinking skills, innovation and creativity, adaptability, initiative and stress tolerance to various situations.
  • Must provide a high level of customer service.
  • Ability to work long hours, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, nontraditional work hours, extended periods of time without days off, travel, and be on-call as a regular part of the position.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, stand for long periods, work in various environmental conditions, and assist injured individuals on / off playing surfaces.
  • Proven ability to multi-task, work independently, prioritize, and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Working knowledge of electronic medical records systems.
  • Familiarity with sport specific injuries.
  • Familiarity with manual therapy techniques.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Athletic Training Student preceptor experience.
