Job Summary

The University of Michigan Library in Ann Arbor is one of the world's largest academic research libraries. The Physical Collections and Access team provides access to and maintains the library's physical collections, including nearly 8 million physical items. We make sure the library's book stacks remain accessible and usable for library visitors and ensure online records are accurate.
 

As a member of the Physical Collections and Access team, you will be responsible for supporting the Physical Collections and Access unit by routine collection maintenance, services, projects, and essential activities within the Hatcher Graduate Library with a focus on the withdrawal of material being removed from the library's physical collections. You will focus on projects related to the physical collections and their associated online records in the library's integrated library system.

What You'll Do

  • Process and withdraw materials from library collections.
  • Process items being transferred between library locations.
  • Evaluate the condition of withdrawn & unused items and send materials to resale vendors or recycling. 
  • Update and maintain withdrawal/transfer statistics.
  • Provide general collection support by retrieving, scanning, and sorting materials.
  • Update records in the library's integrated library system (Alma).
  • Coordinate recycling pickups and complete inventory related tasks.
  • Prepare and process material for binding.

Skills You Have

  • High School degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Ability to move and/or transport materials that weigh up to 45 pounds.
  • 1+ years of demonstrated experience of strong written and verbal communication responding to different types of questions and situations.
  • 1+ years of demonstrated proficiency for accuracy, attention to detail, and managing time effectively. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while also maintaining communication with others related to connected workflows.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in learning new digital technologies and programs that handle records or inventory.
  • Commitment to fostering a welcoming environment by recognizing and incorporating differing viewpoints, backgrounds, and ideas to enrich the organization.

Modes of Work

The mode of work is on-site. When needed, work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

The expected schedule for this position is from 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday. This work schedule may be modified based on operational needs.

Additional Information

The person in this position routinely moves through the building to access materials. They would need to regularly ascend/descend ladders to retrieve and shelve materials. They must be able to navigate the facility using the stairs during an emergency.  They must have the ability to move and/or transport materials that weigh up to 45 pounds.
