Job Summary

To perform Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), MIG, TIG, oxyacetylene in accordance with American Welding Society (AWS) A5.18 Structural Welding Code - Steel, and braze, cut, solder and shape metaland special alloys in the fabrication and repair of equipment and structures.

Responsibilities*

  • Perform (SMAW) electric arc, MIG, TIG, and acetylene welding on equipment including pipe, tanks, machine
  • parts, metal structures, fixtures and fittings in accordance with (AWS) A5.18 Structural Welding Code standards, codes and specifications.
  • Prepare objects for welding by cleaning and filing, positioning, aligning and clamping.
  • Set up and adjust acetylene and arc welding equipment.
  • Construct or repair iron gratings, railings, frames, fittings, tools and automotive parts and machinery in accordance with codes and specifications.
  • Cut, braze and shape all types of metal and special alloys in the fabrication and repair of equipment and structures using MIG, TIG, STICK, oxyacetylene and other welding equipment.
  • Design, lay out, fabricate, erect and repair steel work of structural or ornamental nature, involving the operation of special equipment, including power shears, power rolls, drill press, iron workder, pipe bender, and plasma CNC.
  • Silver solder and perform helio-arc welding.
  • Clean scale from the bead, using hammer and wire brush.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches and job specifications.
  • Prepare, update and maintain all required reports and documentation in accordance with (ASW) codes, standards and requirements.
  • Prepare records and service reports of materials and time expended.
  • Clean and perform minor repairs on welding equipment.
  • Perform prime coat painting.  Touch up paint when required.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from high school or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is necessary.
  • Considerable experience in welding through an apprenticeship, trade school or community college.
  • Possession of (AWS) A5.18 Structural Welding Code-Steel Certification or equivalent welding certification is necessary.
  • Considerable experience in the welding, brazing and forming of metal is necessary.
  • Considerable knowledge of the equipment, methods and materials used in welding is necessary.
  • Skill in the operation of acetylene and arc welding equipment is necessary.
  • Advanced skills in the operation of acetylene, MIG, TIG, and STICK welding.
  • Reasonable manual strength and dexterity is necessary.
  • Ability to work from ladders and scaffolding is necessary.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications is necessary.
  • Must possess the necessary requirements to operate a University vehicle.
  • Ability to use electronic devices, such as tablets to enter and view information.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Certifications or experience in sheet metal fabrication or similar fabrication trade.
  • Experience operating CNC Plasma cutters to create shapes and patterns.
  • Experience operating Bridgeport and Lathe.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

The primary hours of this position will be: Monday - Friday, 7:00am to 3:30pm. However, this position may be asked to work overtime as needed.
