Job Summary

Instructs students and new staff in clinical techniques and assists in the administrative management of one or more clinical areas. Employees typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities.  Primary activities and decision-making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree.

Responsibilities*

Basic Function and Responsibility

  • The Senior Clinical Technologist plans and implements special, complex procedures for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, along with assisting in the establishment and maintenance of quality control standards.
  • In addition to performing the duties of a medical technologist at a high level of expertise, and with assistance from Medical Technologist Specialists, the Senior Clinical Technologist is normally responsible for and oversees the following activities in their area of expertise.

Technical Lead:

  • Provide day-to-day technical direction of qualified personnel performing testing and reporting high complexity test results.
  • Responsible for reviewing procedures and policies no less than biennially within the document management system. This includes modifying and archiving. Final approval for any new or revised document is completed by the CLIA Laboratory Director. 
  • Provides advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation, consultation, and verification of test results.  Acts as technical adviser/expert in area of expertise.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new protocols and selection of new equipment. 
  • Performs validation of equipment, analyzers, and tests in area of expertise.

QC/QA/Compliance

  • Monitor, organize, maintain Quality control and Quality Assurance Records. Ensure that quality assurance and control is being performed in a timely manner. Maintains all QA/QC records.
  • Review Quality Control and instrument function reports to ensure that acceptable levels of analytical performance are maintained.
  • Monitors instrument maintenance, repair, and calibration in area of expertise
  • Assists in preparation for CAP inspections.
  • Submits PT surveys and performs summary review, along with review with testing personnel.

Training/Competency

  • Assess training competency of new employees, initially, and after 6 months.  Performs annual evaluation. 
  • Conduct training competencies for all new test methods or new equipment.

  • Distribute proficiency testing among employees in the area of expertise.

Perform Testing 

  • Maintain expertise/competency in all areas related to the area of expertise.

Professional Development

  • Fulfill departmental continuing education requirement.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and implementation of special and complex procedures for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the Hematology lab.
  • Perform and maintain verification of multiple instrument precision and accuracy including:  Calibration of all Hematology Analyzers, Ensure corrective action is properly documented for compliance, Maintain control lots, do inventory, check expiration dates, Review control and reagent labeling, Maintain service invoices and PMI records and ensure instruments are functioning properly before returning to service.
  • Provide educational in-services when requested.
  • Assist in education of staff and physicians
  • Maintain the privacy of peers and staff, to understanding of errors, find ways to help avoid the errors, and do not spread gossip or share the errors with others.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and atmosphere for all staff to work in
  • When errors appear to be systemic in nature-bring to the attention of manager and supervisors to work with staff in finding solutions.
  • Assist in evaluating new equipment.
  • Assist in planning and implementing new assays and/or processes.
  • Serve as a resource for sed rates and CBCDs, including slide review.
  • Assist with morphology and WBC differential competency assessment.

Supervision Received

  • Administrative supervision is received from the Administrative Manager, or other designee.
  • Functional supervision is received from a qualified Supervisor, Administrative Manager, or other designee.

Supervision Exercised

  • Functional supervision is exercised over Laboratory Technicians, Medical Technologists, Medical Technologist Specialists, and other assigned staff.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science, or biological science which is directly related to the duties of the position is required, as well as certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS (ASCP) or Medical Technologist MT (AMT) or specialty certification is required.
  • Must have a minimum of 4 years (post-training), clinical experience in hematology.
  • Must have the demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively with other medical personnel in both verbal and written form; demonstrated ability to independently organize and prioritize work, and to exercise initiative in recognizing and solving problems.  Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse team.

  • Must have demonstrated ability to perform the duties of an MT at a high level of expertise, and the ability to perform the assigned work without sacrificing patient care or assigned work.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hour position is on the day shift, it is considered Exempt and is a minimum of 40 hours a week, (100%), it may require additional time to accomplish extra duties and/or projects, attend meetings, and assist with emergent situations including CAP inspections.  Staff will participate in rotating weekends, holidays, off-shifts and on call.

Additional Information

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Works with infectious disease and/or hazardous materials.
  • May have exposure to noise from laboratory equipment and pneumatic tube system.
  • Will typically receive an average of 16 hrs/wk (40%) to accomplish the extra duties.  This will vary at the scheduling supervisor's/manager's discretion based on the amount of senior clinical work pending, and patient work or other projects that must be completed.
  • May participate in a rotating weekend, holiday and on call work schedule.
  • Requires frequent (standing/walking/sitting/hand pipetting) for long periods of time and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
