Job Summary

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Lead Cardiac Sonographer serves as a department lead as well as a clinical and research sonographer performing Transthoracic, Transesophageal, and Stress Echocardiography (exercise and pharmacologic). 

The Lead Sonographer roles and responsibilities beyond the Cardiac Sonographer role include: The coordination of daily departmental workflow and the professional development of sonographer staff, with focus on real-time and in the moment active mentoring. Leadership activities are performed in accordance with facility policies and procedures and applicable professional standards. This position requires establishing a connection of trust and authority of peers. 

Responsibilities*

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential:

• Demonstrate advanced skills in echocardiography.

• Coordination of the daily workflow of the Adult Echo laboratory.

• In collaboration with the Supervisor, create and maintain the sonographer staffing schedule. Plan and establish work schedules and staffing requirements to support the needs of the inpatient and ambulatory care populations.   

• Assess sonographer professional and clinical job performance.

• Provide mentorship, training, and ongoing feedback to cardiac sonographers, to promote quality imaging. Facilitate department quality initiatives. 

• Ensure sonographer skills competency. Conduct annual competency assessments, and periodic clinical performance evaluations to assess additional training needs.
• Collaborate with Medical Director and administrative manager to update and maintain protocols.
• Train sonographer staff to maintain compliance with all regulatory requirements. 
• Contribute to a work environment that brings a high level of energy, team building, collaboration, and solutions-based thinking. 

• Aid in professional development of sonographer staff to ensure knowledge, skills and clinical competencies are maintained. 

• Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with co-workers, physicians, administrators, and other members of the Michigan Medicine team. 

• Function as a liaison between the department attending physicians and sonographer staff providing appropriate feedback when necessary. 

• Function as a clinical and research sonographer, in accordance with the clinical sonographer job description. 

• Research

  • In collaboration with Supervisor, work with Michigan Medicine research department to coordinate research trials involving echocardiography.

  • Participate in echo lab research and educate team members on research protocols.
• Monitor department equipment to ensure it is well maintained. Work with clinical engineering on preventative and corrective maintenance. 

RELATED DUTIES:

This position is expected to be split between Lead and clinical responsibilities.

• 50% of appointment allocated to performance of Lead Sonographer functions.
• 50% of appointment allocated to performance of clinical/research echocardiography.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

This position takes direction from the Adult Echocardiography Laboratory Cardiac Sonographer Supervisor, Administrative Manager, and the Cardiovascular Medicine Administrative Director.

Required Qualifications*

Essential

• Associate's Degree in Cardiovascular Technology or Medical sonography with a specialty in Echocardiography is required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Candidate must meet one of the following echocardiography credential criteria: 

  • An ARDMS Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS)

  • A CCI Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS)

• Extensive clinical experience in echocardiography.

  • Experience in all clinical echo modalities (TTE, TEE, and Stress/Dobutamine Echocardiography).

  • Experience in new echo technologies such as 3D and Strain Imaging. 

  • Experience in advanced cardiac pathology, and structural heart examinations.

  • Experience in pediatric echocardiography or adult congenital echocardiography. 

     

• Demonstrated commitment to professional growth (e.g., continuing medical education in the specialty area(s) performed, higher education, research, staff training, etc.).

• Demonstrated proficiency with computer skills and software programs for documentation activities and report generation.

• BCLS certification required. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.

• Bachelor?s Degree or higher in medical ultrasound, administration, business, or related field. 

• Advanced Cardiac Sonographer Status.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

The work schedule will consist of Monday and Friday 8am to 4:30pm, Tues-Thursday 7:30am to 4PM. Saturday and Sunday, on a rotational basis. Work locations may vary between our Echo sites in and outside of Ann Arbor. 

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening
