Job Summary

The Michigan Clinical Trial Support Unit Clinical Research Coordinator Unit (M-CTSU CRC Unit) is seeking a part-time Clinical Research Intern to support clinical research activities while gaining structured, hands-on experience in research coordination.

 

This paid, term-limited position is designed for an individual interested in developing a deeper understanding of clinical research processes, including regulatory compliance, research documentation, participant-facing activities, data management, and research ethics. The selected candidate will work under the guidance of experienced clinical research professionals and receive training, mentorship, and regular feedback throughout the appointment.

 

The position will provide moderately complex technical and administrative support for clinical research projects. The anticipated appointment is approximately 20 hours per week from September 2026 through May 2027.

The M-CTSU Clinical Research Intern will work under the direct guidance of experienced clinical research staff and will assist team members who hold delegated study responsibilities. The intern will not independently manage studies, perform project-specific responsibilities, or make decisions regarding participant eligibility, informed consent, protocol implementation, or regulatory compliance.

 

Responsibilities may include:

 

  • Attend and actively contribute to the unit?s weekly education and training events, including discussions, presentations, workshops, and other professional-development activities.
  • Assist delegated study-team members with research documentation, regulatory materials, data collection and entry, data-quality review, and maintenance of study files.
  • Observe and support approved participant recruitment, scheduling, study visits, and follow-up activities under appropriate supervision.
  • Conduct literature searches and help organize or summarize information relevant to ongoing research projects.
  • Assist with reports, presentations, educational materials, and other research-related projects.
  • Participate in study-team and unit meetings and communicate progress, questions, and observations to the appropriate team members.
  • Complete required institutional, privacy, safety, and research training, including applicable CITI and PEERRS modules.
  • Maintain participant confidentiality, data integrity, and compliance with study protocols, institutional policies, and applicable regulations.
  • Meet regularly with an assigned supervisor or mentor to receive guidance, discuss learning goals, and review progress
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

All activities will be performed within the intern?s documented training and authorization and under the oversight of qualified research personnel. Duties may vary based on unit needs, available learning opportunities, and the intern?s demonstrated competencies.

 

Supervision Received:

This position receives direct supervision and reports directly to the MCTSU Unit Administrator.

Required Qualifications*

High school diploma or GED is necessary. 

Desired Qualifications*

Bachelor?s Degree in Health Science or an equivalent combination of related education and experience is desirable.  An understanding of medical terminology, experience in a large complex health care setting, ability to effectively communicate with staff and faculty of all levels, and knowledge of university policies and procedures is desirable. 

Modes of Work

The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

This is a 50% FTE position requiring approximately 20 hours per week. The schedule will be established in consultation with the selected candidate and the unit based on operational and study needs.

 

Work will occur during standard weekday business hours to support research-participant visits, training sessions, and study-team meetings. The position is expected to be primarily on-site at University Hospital South in Ann Arbor. Eligibility for remote work, if any, will depend on assigned responsibilities, data-access requirements, and unit policy.
