Job Summary

Occupational Health Services (OHS) is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Medical Assistant to join our fast-paced Occupational Health Services team. In this role, you will support clinic operations by assisting with clinical procedures, performing diagnostic testing, maintaining equipment, and providing direct patient care. You will play a key part in ensuring smooth patient flow, delivering high-quality care, and supporting both staff and employees across the health system and campus.

Responsibilities*

  • Room patients and support patient flow according to OHS procedures.
  • Complete patient intake, including documenting chief complaints, obtaining vital signs, height and weight, and performing visual acuity and Snellen eye testing.
  • Perform point-of-care testing, urinalysis, audiometry, spirometry, injections, and blood draws within the scope of practice.
  • Administer and read TB skin tests and provide immunizations.
  • Perform phlebotomy and Ishihara color vision testing.
  • Conduct drug screens, including for-cause, HPRP, and police pre-employment screenings.
  • Complete New Employee Assessments using the OHS virtual workflow.
  • Perform qualitative and/or quantitative fit testing and train employees on the proper fit, use, and care of N95 respirators, PAPR, and other respiratory protection equipment.
  • Obtain medical records through MCIR and MyChart as needed.
  • Support vaccine management, clinic ordering, and inventory management.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and obtain, document, and communicate medical test results to providers.
  • Assist with medical surveillance testing and clerical activities supporting the medical surveillance program.
  • Coordinate appointments within subspecialties.
  • Maintain medical supply expiration logs and clinic inventory.
  • Ensure equipment is properly maintained, clean, and operating according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Provide general clerical support and complete data entry.
  • Recognize situations requiring immediate attention and respond according to established guidelines.
  • Escort patients to locations such as X-ray and the Emergency Department when appropriate.
  • Serve as a preceptor and resource for other Medical Assistants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant program OR current enrollment in or completion of coursework in a healthcare professional program, such as medical school, physician assistant, nursing, or related clinical training; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience (1-3 years).
  • Knowledge of clinical workflows, patient care, and basic medical terminology.
  • Experience working in a health system or equivalent experience.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office, Outlook, and other applicable platforms.
  • Ability to perform clerical and administrative support tasks, including telephone communication, typing, computer use, and data entry.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform procedures and testing appropriate to the clinical setting.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant diploma program or an equivalent combination of education and experience (1-3 years).
  • Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) or Medical Assistant (MA)
  • Occupational Health experience.
  • Experience with MyChart, Enterprise Health, and/or other electronic health record systems.
  • Medical terminology knowledge.
  • CPR certification.
  • Phlebotomy certification.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week, 10-hour shifts, Monday-Friday 

6:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Alternating off days

Work Locations

This position supports Occupational Health Services at two sites:

South Industrial
Med Inn

Candidates must be flexible to work at either location based on clinic needs.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
