Job Summary

This full-time pharmacist position will serve as the Lead Pharmacist for the opening of the new Troy Center for Specialty Care (TCSC) Infusion and OR Pharmacy. This position will work in collaboration with a team of dedicated pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, providers, nurses, and other interdisciplinary partners to provide comprehensive care to patients of the Troy Center for Specialty Care. This position will also play a critical leadership role within the TCSC Pharmacy Team and will also be a member of the UM Infusion Pharmacies Leadership Team. 

The Troy Medical Campus will be the University of Michigan Health's first clinical presence in the Oakland County market. We are building a state-of-the-art specialty care campus in the heart of Troy where a deeply human commitment to personalized care will come together with world-class expertise, cutting-edge therapies, and a legacy of more than 175 years of transformative research to help patients and families in Oakland County and beyond find their Michigan Answers. The campus will feature two outpatient facilities with over a dozen specialty programs, including Cancer services, Musculoskeletal/Sports Medicine, and Reproductive Medicine, as well as a surgery/procedure center, comprehensive imaging services, laboratory, pharmacy, and therapy services. The campus is conveniently located near I-75, surrounded by popular shopping and dining, and features free parking, on-site cafe, with facilities committed to sustainable, environmentally responsible practices. 

Pharmacy services planned for the building include community pharmacy, OR and infusion pharmacy, satellite pharmacy, and ambulatory clinic-based pharmacy services. This position will play a pivotal role in the planning and opening of the new infusion and OR pharmacy, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. Furthermore, this position will have the exciting opportunity to cross-train to provide support to the community pharmacy.

Responsibilities*

Pharmacist in Charge responsibilities (PIC):

This position will assume the Pharmacist-in-Charge role overseeing the handling and security of medications for the Troy Center for Specialty Care building during the planning and opening stages.  The duties of the PIC include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Supervision of all activities of pharmacy employees as they relate to the practice of pharmacy including the purchasing, storage, compounding, repackaging, dispensing, and distribution of drugs and devices to ensure that those activities are performed in compliance with this part and the rules promulgated under this part. This includes the oversight of sterile compounding and cleanroom operations, to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. 

  • Enforcement and oversight of policies and procedures applicable to the employees of the pharmacy for the procurement, storage, compounding, and dispensing of drugs and the communication of information to the patient in relation to drug therapy.

  • Establishment and supervision of the method and manner for storage and safekeeping of pharmaceuticals, including maintenance of security provisions to be used when the pharmacy is closed.

  • Establishment and supervision of the record-keeping system for the purchase, sale, delivery, possession, storage, and safekeeping of drugs and devices.

  • Establishment of policies and procedures for individuals who are delegated responsibilities for any of the tasks described in this subsection by the PIC.

 

Clinical Pharmacist Generalist job duties include:

Community Pharmacy Services: 

  • Review, clarify, and process medication orders in a timely manner while assuring appropriateness of therapy.

  • Perform medication reconciliation on each set of prescription orders to facilitate a smooth transition of care to the outpatient community setting.

  • Provide patient counseling, Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services, and administer immunizations.

  • Provide functional supervision of technical staff working in their area, including completion of job assignments and assuring adherence to institutional policies and procedures.

  • Serve as preceptors for University of Michigan Pharm.D. students on a variety of rotations, including medication reconciliation, direct patient care, Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) during the second- and third years, and institutional unit-based hospital practice, Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) during the fourth year.  In addition, pharmacists will assist with precepting pharmacy residents, including the PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Resident and the PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residents.  

  • Collaborate with nursing, social work, providers, pharmacists, and others to optimize patient care.

  • Assist with problem-solving and process improvements within the pharmacy.

  • Other duties and projects assigned by the manager to facilitate safe and efficient patient care.

 

Infusion and OR Pharmacy Services: 

  • Review, clarify, and process medication orders in a timely manner while assuring appropriateness of therapy.
  • Dispensing and checking of sterile product preparations.
  • Hosting in-services for nursing education.
  • Dispense investigational study medications and clinical order verifications.
  • Ensuring optimal effectiveness and safety of medications used throughout the institution.
  • Serve as preceptors for University of Michigan Pharm.D. students on a variety of rotations.  
  • Providing accurate and timely drug information
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary health care team members

Teaching:

Pharmacists serve as preceptors for University of Michigan Pharm.D. students on a variety of rotations, including medication reconciliation, direct patient care Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) during the second and third year, and institutional unit-based hospital practice Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) during the fourth year.  In addition, pharmacists will assist with precepting pharmacy residents, including the PGY-1 Community Pharmacy Resident, as well as the PGY-2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residents.   

Quality Improvement:

Pharmacists provide input and suggestions for process improvements to improve the care that is provided to our patients. Activities include researching opportunities and initiating action plans with follow through until successful implementation of the improvement.

Supervision of Work Area:

Pharmacists provide functional supervision of technical staff working in their area including completion of job assignments and assuring adherence to institutional policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications*

Education/ Training:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (Pharm.D.)  from an accredited College of Pharmacy or BSPharm with commensurate experience.
  • License:
  • Current license to practice pharmacy in the State of Michigan (including a Controlled Substance license), verifiable through the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, or eligibility to become licensed within 90 days of employment start date.
  • Other:
  • Ability to perform a variety of manual dexterity movements, including keyboarding and non-sterile and sterile product preparation. Fluency in reading, writing and speaking English. The job involves considerable standing and walking, as well as extensive work on a computer, along with fatiguing physical motions.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Completion of a PGY1 residency and/or BCPS or BCOP certification
  • Prior infusion or oncology pharmacy experience with sterile product preparation, including both hazardous and non-hazardous medications

Licensure & Certification

Current registration as a Registered Pharmacist by the Michigan State Board of Pharmacy is necessary. Possession of a state narcotics license is necessary. This classification requires Primary Source Verification.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

The schedule for this position is day or afternoon shifts, Monday thru Friday. Weekend rotation assignments at other Ambulatory Infusion Pharmacies can be applicable.
