Job Summary

The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan invite applications for a Lecturer I position at 33% effort for the Winter Term 2027.  This appointment is scheduled to begin on January 13, 2027 and end on May 7, 2027.

Responsibilities*

Duties of these Lecturer I positions are expected to include teaching, developing course materials, evaluating and grading students, and holding regularly scheduled office hours. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer I in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester.  Full-time and part-time positions are available.

Course Title(s): EEB116: Biology of Sex

Course Objectives: The main goal of this course is to help students understand the nature of science and how to evaluate the quality of science. The focus of the course is on the biology of sex from an evolutionary perspective. By surveying a wide scope of diverse organisms and some amazing sexual adaptations, students will come to better appreciate how the sex lives of other organisms can help us understand ourselves, including the basis for mate choice and mate preference, the role of developmental biology, the endocrine system, and genetics and neurobiology, as well as the evolutionary costs and benefits of sex. The course also examines facts and fallacies about sex, including aspects of human sexual biology. By the end of the course, students will not only have a greater appreciation of the diversity and the role of sex in much of life on earth, but they will also improve their scientific literacy so that they can navigate and understand the role of science for us as individuals and as a society. 

Required Qualifications*

The candidate must hold a Ph.D. in ecology, evolutionary biology or organismal biology, or a related discipline, with a focus on life histories and reproductive physiology.  The candidate must have demonstrated excellence in college-level teaching in the United States. 

Desired Qualifications*

The applicant should also be familiar with phylogenetic concepts, including the application of evolutionary principles in a comparative context.  Lastly, many examples focus on fish given their different modes of reproduction so expertise in fish biology is desirable.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
