Job Summary

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan invites applications for a full-time Lecturer III position in Linguistics. Applicants are required to have a PhD in Linguistics or related field. Additional specialization in Speech and Hearing Science is desirable. This role supports departmental initiatives to enhance undergraduate education, specialized advising, and career-path development for students preparing for post-graduate study and professional careers in speech-language pathology, speech and hearing sciences, and adjacent fields. Because the University of Michigan does not offer a specialized undergraduate degree in speech and hearing sciences, approximately one-third of linguistics majors rely on our curriculum and advising to fulfill required prerequisites for graduate programs.

The successful candidate will provide high-level undergraduate instruction, specialized student advising and mentoring, and administrative leadership related to the appointment. Evidence of excellence in teaching and service is expected.

The initial appointment period will be four (4) years and the appointment may be renewed (based on programmatic need, funding, and performance). The appointment is subject to final approval by the college.

Responsibilities*

1. Instructional & Curricular Duties

  • Teach undergraduate linguistics courses that connect foundational knowledge to professional applications.
  • Develop and instruct course offerings that are relevant for Speech and Hearing science pathways, possibly including LING 335: Speech Disorders and LING 336 / PSYCH 335: Reading: Language, the Brain, and Cognition, both of which satisfy graduate program application prerequisites.
  • Ideally re-develop and manage LING 385: Experiential Practice in Linguistics, supporting internship-based training and experiential learning opportunities for vocational advancement of undergraduate students.
  • Participate in course rotation for different undergraduate courses, including large-enrollment courses that support teaching assistants, based on applicants expertise.

2. Specialized Academic Advising & Student Mentorship

  • Serve as the primary departmental advisor for Linguistics majors and minors interested in speech and hearing sciences, speech pathology, and related fields, while also contributing to general department advising.
  • Provide intensive one-on-one mentorship to guide students through complex prerequisite course selection and application strategies for competitive graduate programs.
  • Offer detailed feedback on graduate application materials and write comprehensive letters of recommendation for prospective graduate applicants.
  • Serve as the faculty advisor to the student-led Pre-Speech and Hearing Club, sponsored by the Department of Linguistics.
  • Collaborate with general advisors at the College level to build collaborative and consistent guidance for students preparing to pursue careers in speech pathology and audiology.

3. Administrative & Service Leadership

  • Serve as an active member of the Department Undergraduate Committee, providing leadership and insights on curriculum, funding, programming, and pre-speech pathology educational tracks.
  • Manage experiential learning initiatives and program coordination that maintain the departments strong placement record in top-tier graduate programs.

Required Qualifications*

  • Ph.D. in Linguistics or a related field.
  • A proven track record of excellence in undergraduate instruction and pedagogical expertise relevant to linguistics.
  • Evidence of successful administrative or professional service, possibly including student advising, curriculum development and mentorship.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Ability to connect theoretical course content with practical, experiential learning and vocational placement opportunities.
  • Ability to advise and mentor student-led academic or professional organizations.
  • Demonstrated skills and/or pedagogical experience to develop and teach courses relevant to speech and hearing sciences, speech-language pathology, or related disciplines.
  • Evidence of skills to guide undergraduates through prerequisite planning and admissions processes for elite graduate programs in speech and hearing sciences.
